Subsequently, the full hunter pocketwatch was developed, giving a lid to protect the watch face. The half-hunter pocketwatch, with a hole or glass window in the lid, was developed to allow time-telling without the inconvenience of opening the watch lid.
Traditionally, open faced pocketwatches have the pendant at 12 o'clock to allow the wearer to tell the time whilst holding the watch by the pendant. Hunter and half hunter pocketwatches traditionally had the pendant facing 3 o'clock, to allow the wearer to tell the time whilst holding the pendant in his right hand and opening the watch case with his left.
