Welsh Lovespoons were originally spoons with decorative handles which were hand carved from a single piece of wood and presented as a courtship or wedding gift, a tradition dating back to the 16th century. In the 19th century the giving of spoons began to include special occasions such as Wedding Anniversaries, Christenings and Birthdays.
The symbols on this lovespoon signify a wedding or anniversary, and represent the following:
